Jiaying Hello and welcome to The English We Speak, I’m Jiaying…
Rob And I’m Rob. Hey, Jiaying, I wonder if you can help me with something.
Jiaying I’m always happy to help Rob. What is it?
Rob Well, I haven’t finished making today’s programme – and I thought, maybe you could quickly do it?
Jiaying The programme’s not finished?! Rob, ‘just’ making a programme is easier said than done.
Rob So, it’s easy? You can do it?
Jiaying No, Rob. It’s easy to say ‘do it’ but in practice it’s not. ‘Easier said than done’ is an expression. We use it to mean what we say about doing something is easy, but in reality it is difficult to do.
Rob OK, so making this programme isn’t that easy – so what do you need?
Jiaying Examples.
Rob That’s OK, I’ve got those already….
Examples We said we’d find a cheaper house to live in outside the city, but that’s easier said than done.
I thought getting the train to the airport would be simple, but it was easier said than done.
I’m trying to lose weight but it’s easier said than done.
Jiaying This is The English We Speak from BBC Learning English and we’re learning about the expression ‘easier said than done’, which means to talk about doing something is easy, but in reality, it’s difficult to do.
Rob So, you think finishing The English We Speak is easier said than done? Well, don’t worry because I’ve managed to finish the script…
Jiaying Good!
Rob …and, I’ve printed out the scripts, and I’ve prepared the studio – so, to be honest it’s easy to say and do!
Jiaying But the hard part is remembering to record it – but don’t worry, I have, so the programme is done.
Rob You make it look so easy!
Jiaying If you say so, Rob. Bye.
Rob Bye.
